Wedding Anniversary

I feel that I must not let the month of July go by without sharing this poem. This is the month of my 10th wedding anniversary and I’d like to commemorate it with something that captures my view of marriage at this point in my life.
Habitation
by Margaret Atwood
Marriage is not
a house or even a tent
it is before that, and colder:
the edge of the forest, the edge
of the desert
the unpainted stairs
at the back where we squat
outside, eating popcorn
the edge of the receding glacier
where painfully and with wonder
at having survived even
this far
we are learning to make fire
Wow. Ten years. And here I thought we wouldn’t even make it into our seventh, being in constant mortal danger of death by throtlling.
Wow. You’re still both alive.
*bows low to the ground*
Seriously, congratulations! Here’s to 10 more….!
hi Chiq…ur ten years of marriage is my wife’s 37th year on earth… here’s a toast to both!!!! miss you …
bo
really??? 10 years– will i ever get to that point in my marriage?? im on my 4th, and it sure is not a house…..
cheers to you and your marriage….here’s to us who thrive to make fire….and to the others who wish to enter the realm of complexities- may they stand firm on their ground….
love,
